Having a snack between meals doesn’t have to mean ruining your weight loss plan with a bunch of empty calories. There are alternatives to grabbing a candy bar or handful of chips.
There are many healthy snack foods out there that will satisfy you far more than a Snickers. You may have to bring them with you from home though as none of these foods are found in vending machines.
Some ideas for healthy snacks include:
• Fruits and Vegetables. An apple a day keeps the doctor away, right?
And a ziplock bag full of carrots and celery will do the trick too.
• A Baked Potato. An already cooked potato still wrapped in tinfoil is a great mini-meal in and of itself. A potato contains less calories than a grapefruit and has an abundance of vitamins, minerals, and fiber. It’s also fat and cholesterol free!
• Granola. When I used to go camping or hiking as a kid we always took a container full of “gorp” along for the journey. A simple mixture of nuts, grains, raisins, and seeds is all you need for a healthy alternative to junk food during the day. many health food stores even let you create your own. Just don’t mix in any M&Ms :-)
• Fruit Juice. My brother once fasted for two weeks on nothing but fruit juice and water. He detoxed his system and consumed enough nutrients from fruit alone to maintain a radiant energy during this period. It can certainly sustain you until your next meal. Make sure it’s actual juice though and not fruit flavored sugar water!
• Water. Did you know that your brain can’t really feel the difference between hunger and dehydration? It’s true. So when you feel hungry you my actually just be thirsty. Drink plenty of water throughout the day and make sure to have a glass 20 to 30 minutes before every meal. For more info about the benefits of water check out this article.
You know you’re going to get hungry during the day, so why not plan ahead and bring along one of these healthy snack foods before you leave the house. That way have the satisfaction of knowing you’ve been proactive about losing weight and improving your health.
You’ll also have more energy throughout the day because you’ll have consumed nutrient rich foods rather than a bunch of empty calories.

i use hummus on sanwiches instead of mayo.
shrimp is a great lo cal protien.
I make quick salad rolls with shrimp, spinich, bead sprouts and bagged broccoli-carrot slaw. I dip a rice paper in water and roll it all up. I use low cal catalina dressing or chili sauce for a dip. It’s LOW cal. (and my husband doesn’t even complain!)

I like your ideas. Healthy options are easy but do require a little ahead planning.I like popcorn (no butter) for a low cal snack.

Great idea about hummus Leslie. I need to add that to the list. My girlfriend grew up in Beirut, Lebanon where it’s a staple. If you’ve seen “You Don’t Mess With The Zohan” you know the people in that area of the world use it for everything

And as we send our children back to school, this is a reminder to send health snacks.
